Frequently asked questions

1.  How QUICKLY CAN i BE seen?
Same day appointments are available every day.  If you call late in the day, we typically have open appointments for the next day.  New patient appointments are available in less than one week.
2.  How do I get medication refills?
There are several ways to get your medication refills quickly.  1)  The most convenient is to sign up for our patient portal.  You can make a refill request from the convenience of your own home.  Simply send a message directly to your provider with the name of the medication.  2) You may also call our main number and choose the option to leave a message for your provider's nurse.  3) Lastly, we also recommend at each appointment asking your provider for refills.

Although we make every effort to complete these requests in a speedy manner, refills may take up to 48 hours to process so we kindly ask that you call at least 2 days before your prescription runs out.
3.  How do I get a referral to a specialist?
Your provider will order a referral at the time of your office visit if it is determined that a referral is needed.  You may also call our main number and choose the option for a "referral".  For your convenience, we have arranged for most specialists to come to our office.
4.  How do I get in contact with someone in an emergency?
Please contact 911 if you are in an emergency.  For non-emergency calls after business hours, we do have a 24/7 on-call service available to you at (843) 761.8800 or (843) 723.2051.
5.  What if I have a question about my bill?
Our Billing Department can be reached directly by calling (843) 761.8800 or (843) 723.2051 and choosing option "2."  They will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have.
6.  What insurance plans do you accept?
We participate in most insurance plans offered in South Carolina, but there are a few exceptions.  Our Billing Department is glad to answer any inquires regarding specific plans.  (843) 761.8800 or (843) 723.2051 and choose option "2."
7.  Can you treat my whole family?
Yes!  The providers at Berkeley Family Practice can take of your entire family from birth to any age.  The only exception is obstetrical care.  Please see an OB-GYN for your obstretical needs.
8.  Are all of your providers (MD, DO and PA-C) board certified?
Yes!  All of the physicians in our office have passed the exam given by the National Board of Family Medicine and re-certify every 10 years.  The specialty of Family Medicine requires all of its physicians to regularly participate in Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities and these are reported on a regular basis.  Our PAs have also passed their certification exam by the NCCPA and are required to complete CME every year.
9.  What is a "PA" or "PA-C"?
"PA" stands for Physician Assistant.  A PA is a nationally-certified and state-licensed medical professional.  The designation of "-C" means the PA has been board-certified by the NCCPA.  A PA has an undergraduate degree followed by several years of post-graduate training in clinical medicine.  They practice medicine under the supervision of a physician.
10.  What hospitals do your doctors work at?
Although our providers do not practice at any hospital, we work closely with all of the hospitals in the area.  If a patient needs to be admitted for any reason, your BFP provider will work with the appropriate specialist or inpatient team to facilitate the transfer or admission of the patient.  We will see you in the office upon discharge and assure you have close follow-up.  If at any time you are hospitalized or go to the emergency room, please call our office so your provider is informed on the latest of your condition and can request records from the hospital.
11.  How do I get lab results?
We are committed to calling you with the results of your labwork within 48 hours of receiving the results.  We will sent a postcard if the results are normal and we have not been able to reach you by phone.  Each test varies on how long it will take to run at the lab.  Please know that we may ask patients to return to the office to discuss abnormal labs so we can answer any questions you may have in person.

Feel free to contact us at any time if you have questions.  This is another great reason to sign up for the patient portal!  You can see your lab results directly on the web.
12.  Should I have a complete physical every year?  Is this covered by my insurance?
Routine preventive health care is very important at any age.  Recommendations are evolving consistently so it is best to discuss your individual case with your physician.

In general, an annual wellness exam is recommended for adults.  Recommended testing will vary based on the age and other medical conditions of the patient.  It is the responsibility of the patient to know what their individual insurance will cover.
